At Honoring America’s Veteran’s, our mission is to help our veterans heal by displaying our gratitude and respect. We do this through recognition events like the annual Phoenix Veterans Day Parade. Due to COVID-19, the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade for 2020 will move virtual, to meet public safety guidelines. The new online event for 2020 is the USA, A Beacon of Liberty.
In addition to shifting the Parade online, the role of the Veterans Grand Marshals will also change to featuring the winners of the “Honor Our Heroes” competition online as well.
Through the updated, “Honoring Our Heroes” competition, you can learn more about the service of veterans like U.S. Army Sergeant Carlyle Brown. He has one of our nation’s highest honors, a Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. You can also learn about U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Diana Pike, a retiree of the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps. Her son Christian was drawn to service in the U.S. Navy Intelligence realm and unfortunately lost his life in a fierce gun battle in Afghanistan. Although Diana’s sadness for the loss of her son remains, she now mentors’ others to ensure the spirit of her son’s service to our country is front and center as she strives to inspire and mentor others.
The diverse backgrounds, experiences, and roles of the men and women who serve our country are an integral part of HAV’s efforts to recognize our military veterans through the “Honor Our Heroes” competition.
Nominations are now open through August 31, 2020.
The successful candidates will represent their fellow Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines from each of the following eras of service:
- World War II − 1941 to 1945
- The Korean War − 1950 to 1953
- The Vietnam War − 1958 to 1975
- Cold War − 1945 to 1991
- Desert Storm − 1990 to 1991
- Operation Enduring Freedom − 2001 to ongoing
- Operation Iraqi Freedom − 2003 to 2011
